    Tangier – Chefchaouen

    We pick you up in Tangier, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, and set off for Chefchaouen, the magical blue city nestled in the Rif mountains. In the afternoon, free time to wander its medina of indigo lanes, its flowery staircases and Uta el-Hammam square.

    Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Fez

    On the way to Fez we visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its mosaics and columns, and the nearby holy city of Moulay Idriss. We reach Fez in the late afternoon to settle into a riad in the medina.

    Fez – city tour

    Full day in Fez with an official local guide: we explore the medieval medina, the famous leather tanneries, the Bou Inania madrasa and the Qaraouiyin University, the oldest in the world. There'll be free time among the artisan souks and the monumental gates.

    Fez – Ifrane – Midelt – Merzouga

    We cross the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and its cedar forests, home to Barbary macaques, and descend the fertile Ziz Valley to Merzouga. At sunset we ride camels to the camp among the Erg Chebbi dunes, to have dinner and sleep under the stars.

    Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades

    After sunrise in the dunes and breakfast, we visit the Rissani market and the gnawa village of Khamlia. We head west to the impressive Todra Gorges and continue to the Dades Valley, where we spend the night.

    Dades – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou

    We travel the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate, the capital of Moroccan cinema with its film studios. We finish in Ait Ben Haddou, a spectacular adobe citadel that's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the setting for many films.

    Ait Ben Haddou – Tizi n Tichka – Marrakech

    We cross the High Atlas via the spectacular Tizi n Tichka pass (2,260 m), with stops at the viewpoints for photos. Arrival in Marrakech and the rest of the day free to start discovering the red city.

Before travelling to Marrakech

Best time

Spring (March–May) and autumn (Sept–Nov). Winter is cold at night; summer is very hot.

What to bring

Light daytime clothes, a warm layer for the night, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable footwear for the sand.

Physical level

Basic level. The camel ride is optional and can be swapped for a 4×4 if you prefer.

Morocco is a safe destination. We recommend travel insurance and bringing any personal medication you need.
